The fast track refurbishment of facilities for a leading printing company led to the specification of a high strength rapid-curing maxit Floor pumped screed which was installed in a single working day.
The screed was part of a new floor system installed by Staffordshire-based Industrial Floor Treatments (Stone) Ltd for Paragon Group UK Ltd as part of a major refurbishment of former packaging company premises near Wakefield, West Yorks.
With just four days’ notice, Industrial Floor Treatments(Stone) Ltd devised a flooring solution which met the need for a hard wearing surface with the high degree of flatness required for high-tech printing installations.
Some 30 tonnes of maxit Floor DuroTop industrial floor screed were used for the 2,500m² floor, creating the smooth, level surface required. Prior to pumping the screed, Industrial Floor Treatments(Stone) shotblasted the original concrete floor slab, removing any remaining paint and contaminants.
Two coats of maxit Floor 4716 primer were then applied prior to pumping of the Floor 4610 screed at a nominal thickness of 7mm. Pumped in two bays, the self-levelling screed was applied in one working day, with the first area of screed “walkable” within a few hours and ready for opening to follow on trades the following morning.
After allowing just three days for further curing, Industrial Floor Treatments (Stone) Ltd then completed the floor by applying the company’s own highbuild epoxy resin coating comprising a base coat of Stonecoat WD followed by a final coating of Stonecoat HB in mid-grey.
Explains Jim White, of Industrial Floor Treatments (Stone) Ltd: “Because Paragon wanted to relocate to the building over a holiday period we had just four days to arrange and mobilise everything. The tight time schedule meant we needed a proven system that would meet the company’s requirements for something that was high in strength, hard-wearing and would provide the level of flatness required when operating precision presses and moving around large consignments of print.”
“We have used the combination of maxit Floor screeds and our epoxy coatings frequently in the past, with excellent results.”
Richard Davies, General Manager of the plant commented on the quality of the floor: “It was important for us to have a smooth, flat surface because of the amount of paper and other items we have to move around on trolleys. A good surface helps to make moving things easier and helps with health and safety issues because the trolleys aren’t jamming on cracked areas.”
“We saw that the maxit floor was working well for the big newspaper companies and was the best product available to suit our requirements.”
